Abstract:
The idea of Living Labs has emerged over the last few years as a need for the deployment of an eco-system that will not only allow the evaluation and fulfillment of requirements in the context of a research project, but will also enable users, experimenters and practitioners –from several research domains- to test and exploit its functionality. Contrary to testbeds, which are focusing on the requirements of the initiating projects, the Living Lab supports a greater scope and allows itself to evolve into more mature stages and ensures its applicability for many years. In the field of production management, the FoF (Factories of the Future) initiative aims at helping SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) to adapt key technologies in order to ensure competitiveness. In that respect Living Labs could play a key role towards achieving this goal as it will enable entities from many sectors to use and experiment on new and competitive solutions. As its user community expands, the Living Lab itself is able to evolve into something new each time, by offering solutions that support small-scale simulation environments for educational purposes to full-scale cyber-physical simulation systems.
