The major reason for employing technologies of Semantic web, mainly the Web Ontology Language and Resource Description Format, is to create a common, explicit, and machine interpretable semantics of data that are gathered, processed and shared among various ARUM components, such as schedulers and planners. The chapter describes the set of ontologies designed for the description of data regarding the discrete production processes and events; discusses the tools developed to simplify the conversion of legacy systems data into the ontological format; and provides examples of the use of ontologies in the production planning and scheduling tasks.
